Summer Camps 2010

Camp Programme

Registration begins March 24, 2010 for current students and April 1, 2010 for the public

DJD summer camps are designed to instill a love of dance. Students experience various dance styles and acquire skills in jazz, West African, tap and funk/hip hop (street dance), as well as elements of ballet, modern and yoga. The emphasis varies depending on the age of the participants and the areas of expertise of the instructor team. The activities and subject areas covered may include:

  • Understanding the why & how of "warming up", building strength, flexibility, proper alignment, cardiovascular fitness and basic injury prevention.
  • Learning the basic building blocks and vocabulary of jazz, tap, West African and funk; feet and arm positions, exercises in coordination, proper technique based on jazz, ballet and modern dance principles, step and movement progressions.
  • Experiencing the elements of creative dance through games and exploration to develop confidence and originality.
  • Discovering the various rhythms of dance through exercises and rhythm games to appreciate and explore the relationship between music and dance.
  • Observing and experiencing dance as a performance art: learning how to stay calm and poised in front of an audience!

Older groups (ages 10+) may also focus on creating their own compositions and learning choreography. Younger groups (ages 5-7) focus on creative work and exploring skill-building activities in a play format. With an emphasis on FUN and CELEBRATION, students are encouraged to explore challenges, demonstrate creativity, expand movement vocabulary, build confidence and develop friendships with other students.
